On Saturday, January 28, 2017, Muslim Family Services (MFS), a division of ICNA Relief USA Programs, hosted a Free Health Fair at the Flint Southwestern Academy in Flint for the local community members to attend. We partnered with private, local organizations of Physicians and Healthcare Professionals including Discount Pharmacy, Vascular Institute of MIchigan, FoodCorp and many others with hopes of providing free health screenings for the deserving community. The event was held from 12:00pm - 3:00pm.

The fair served the purpose of a general check-up; blood sugar and glucose levels were checked, blood pressure was taken, and height and weight was measured to assess patients’ Body Mass Index (BMI). In addition, MFS had community health workers offering various health plans, organizations promoting healthy eating, pharmacists, dentists and doctors offering consultations.

Health lectures were given onsite for attendees to benefit from Dr Jawad Shah, a neurologist from IINN, presented the positive aspect of playing video games. It is necessary to keep the brain active because an idle brain will weaken the brain's ability to concentrate, focus, ability to multitask, etc. Playing video games helps exercise the brain in these areas but too much of playing may cause an addiction. Dr Fahd Mohammed, a dentist, reminded the attendees the importance of maintaining a good oral hygiene. It protects the body from many diseases and strengthens the digestive system.

MFS provided lunch and snacks for the community members and the volunteers to enjoy while taking health tests and listening to the lectures. It was a wonderful example of giving back and it was received warmly and openly by the 50+ guests who attended. We would like to thank all of the doctors and volunteers who helped make this event a success!
